When I originally agreed to be apart of this article I was just helping out a friend and chalking it up to a new experience. Then the article came out and I felt just a bit foolish and like most women could only see flaws. Finally, when I returned to school in the fall I found out that many of my students had tweeted, instagramed and Facebooked this article. I was baffled and asked one of my students why, she explained that obviously I don’t look or dress like the rest of the teachers and it was beyond cool to see me showing that off. Sometimes it slips my mind that my students watch what I do more than they listen to what I say and in the end it was a great reminder of what my job is really all about.
While back to school shopping…
Grandmother of Student: So you teach English, I hope you’re hard on them.
Me: Yes ma’am I am. Have a nice day.
Grandmother of Student: You too, probably your last for awhile.
1.) It helps to understand the native language of the person you are teaching.
2.) You better be able to laugh, out loud and many times a day.
3.) Charades will save your life, everything can be acted out with a little creativity.
4.) Learning a new language from someone much younger than you is a very raw experience, but watching someone 50 years your senior learn a new language is a very humbling and inspiring experience.
5.) Games involving a winning team and a losing team are always a great way to loosen the tension no matter the age.
6.) Thank God everyday for your translator, they make everyone just a little more comfortable, open up classroom and are able to do everything in two different languages without getting tired.
7.) If you’ve never received honey as a teaching gift instead of an apple, man are you missing out.
Or while you are doing classroom lunch duty.
Lunch?
Non-dominant hand is all that’s needed.

Dear tumblr friends I’m off to Germany to teach ESL and have a huge favor to ask:
Could you please suggest music for my classroom playlist. Certain times during the period I play music for my adopt children and my list definitely needs spicing up.
So please suggest any and all of your favorite tunes?
Male Student: The Girl Scouts are a joke!
Female Student: Whatever our cookies are awesome, your just made because the Boy Scouts are broke!
